MALTESE - LANGUAGE OF MALTA

   

Maltese is a Semitic language, but with strong Romantic and Anglic influence. Both the English and Maltese Languages are the official languages of the country. Nearly all Maltese speak English fluently, while Italian is also widely spoken.

The Maltese islands have two official languages, Maltese (Malti) and English. Malti is an indigenous language of Semitic origin spoken by most of the inhabitants. It dates back to the Carthagian and Phoenician period of the island's history and has been influenced by French, Italian, Spanish and English over the centuries.

 

Most of the people in Malta speak or understand English, and for many it has become their first language. Italian and French is also generally spoken.

Education is compulsory between ages 6 and 16, and it is free from primary school level till univeristy. Indeed, Maltese University students receive a stipend free primary education lasts between ages 6 and 16. Adult literacy is 86 percent.
