PASSPORT AND IMMIGRATION ISSUES

PASSPORTS:

In order to visit Malta, a valid passport required by all foreign nationals except the following:

 

   

(a) *nationals of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain in possession of valid national ID card who are visiting as tourists for stays of up to 3 months;

(b) nationals of Switzerland in possession of a national ID card for stays of up to 3 months.

Valid passports must be carried by all who wish to enter Malta except for nationals of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

 

Nationals of these countries must be in possession of a valid ID card and be visiting Malta as tourists for a time period not exceeding 3 months.

Visitors from the European Union, Australia, Canada, United States and Japan do not require a visa for a stay shorter than 3 months.

Nationals of: Andorra, Argentina, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Iceland, India, Israel, Hungary, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Monaco, Morocco, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay and the Vatican City do not require a visa for stays of up to 3 months. Nationals of UK dependencies do not require a visa for stays of up to 3 months either.

Passengers continuing their journey to a third country with the same flight or with the first connecting flight available within 24 hours do not need a visa provided they are in receipt of appropriate documentation pertaining to the remainder of their journey and do not leave the airport.

All other nationals of countries not described above will require a visa. Please note that circumstances continually alter so please contact the representative office of Malta in your area for the latest travel information before you leave.

VISAS:

Required by all except the following for stays of up to 3 months:

(a) nationals of countries referred to in the chart above;

(b) nationals of Commonwealth countries (except nationals of Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ghana, India, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria and Sri Lanka who do need a visa to enter Malta);

(c) nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Iceland, Indonesia, Israel, Hungary (30 days), Korea (Rep. of), Kuwait, Latvia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Monaco, Morocco, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay and Vatican City;

(d) nationals of UK Dependencies;

(e) travellers on transit journeys who are continuing their trip by the same of first connecting airport within 24 hours provided they are holding valid onward or return documentation and not leaving the airport.

Note: Hong Kong citizens in possession of British Overseas (BOC) passports and British Nationals Overseas (BNO) passports do not require a visa; however, holders of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passports do require a visa.

Types of visa and cost:

Single-entry: £23.50; Transit: £18. Multiple-entry visas for 1 year are issued only by the Immigration Police in Malta.

Note: Visitors requiring an entry visa to Malta and undertaking day trips of less than 24 hours to another country do not need to pay for another entry visa on their return to Malta.

Validity: Single-entry visa: 1 month; Transit visa: 24 hours. For renewal or extension, apply to the High Commission or Embassy.

Application to: Consulate (or Consular section at Embassy or High Commission).

Application requirements: (a) Application form. (b) 2 passport-size photos. (c) Passport. (d) Fee (payable in cash or by postal order only). (e) £3.50 is required to cover postage costs, if not collecting visa in person. These can be handed in at the High Commission or Embassy.

Working days required: 10.

Temporary residence: Apply to Principal Immigration Officer, Immigration Office, Police Headquarters, Floriana, Malta.
